Peggy McCay, the Emmy-winning actress best known for her role as Caroline Brady on the NBC soap opera “Days of Our Lives,” died Sunday. She was 90.

“Our dearest Peggy McCay has left us,” Hall wrote. “She was a friend, an activist and a real scrapper! I remember meeting her at the bedside of a dear, very ill friend. I backed her up as she ferociously took on doctors and nurses to make sure he had the very best care. She fought that hard for all her causes. Passionate and tireless. And how she loved being Caroline!”

McCay’s acting credits spanned many television shows, including “Cagney & Lacey,” “Love of Life,” “Maverick,” “LA Law,” “Cold Case,” and “Woman on the Run: The Lawrencia Bembenek Story,” the outlet reported.

She retired her role of Caroline Brady in 2016, after portraying the character for 35 years.

McCay’s co-stars left touching tributes to the veteran actress on social media.

  • For Ed Asner, comic-books and autism are family matters

For Ed Asner, comic-books and autism are family matters

    mic-book store with his kid.

Early last week, the Asners could be spotted at Hollywood's legendary Golden Apple Comics. But they weren't shopping.

Instead, the two were promoting an internet comic-art auction to raise funds for The Ed Asner Family Center. The auction goes live Wednesday.

Founded earlier this year by the actor's son, Matthew, and daughter-in-law, Navah, the center offers programs and education for both special-needs children and their families.

The star of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," ''Lou Grant" and the lead voice in the Pixar animated favorite "Up," Ed Asner has a son and three grandchildren with autism.

"They're (all) beautiful people," the actor noted. "And, at the same time, they need all the help they can get maneuvering through life. The Family Center is designed to help them do that."

Father and son have had a comic-book connection for decades, when the two would buy a couple of new comic books before the elder Asner would take his son to work on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show."

Matthew became a serious comic-art fan, so the idea of an auction to raise funds for a permanent home for the center came about organically. The pair caught a break when Matthew's tweet asking for donations got a response and assist by the revered, award-winning comic artist Kevin Nowlan.

"His tenacity helped us to get to some of the greatest artists in the business: Alex Ross, Sam Keith, Bill Sienkiewicz," said Matthew. Among auction highlights are rare original cover art from "Captain America," ''Astro City" books, as well as three donations from Nowlan himself.

Dad also enjoys comics: "My favorite cartoon or comic strip of all was 'Plastic Man,'" Asner recalled. "I adored his sense of humor. He had a great sense of humor. Perhaps that affected me in later years when I tried to develop one."

Eventually, he did. Asner may end up best remembered for playing hilariously crusty TV-news director Lou Grant on the sitcom classic "The Mary Tyler Moore Show."

"Lou Grant was a total birth of Ed Asner as a comedic personality," Asner commented. "With 'Mary Tyler Moore,' I learned to do comedy, which I had always feared and run from, ignoring the fact that people found me innately funny — just to look at."

When counting wins for work on both "Mary" and "Lou," the role earned Asner a total seven Emmy awards. But Asner acknowledged success came at too big a price. "During my career, I stiffed the family. I let them come in second all too often."

Asner said he deeply regretted not being around for his children, crediting ex-wife Nancy Sykes for Matthew's successes.

Matthew disagreed: "He likes to tell people he had nothing to do with making me who I am, but he had everything to do with making me who I am. He instilled a sense of fairness and a sense of fight for the underdog and a sense of really what's important in life."

Follow AP Entertainment writer Mike Cidoni Lennox online at Twitter: @CidoniLennox

  • They Shall Not Grow Old REVIEW: Peter Jackson’s WW1 in colour is MESMERISING

They Shall Not Grow Old REVIEW: Peter Jackson’s WW1 in colour is MESMERISING

o;s poem For the Fallen, was simultaneously shown at cinemas across the country followed by a Q&A with the director and film critic Mark Kermode.

The documentary film was committed by 14-18 NOW and the Imperial War Museums, who provided Jackson with hours of archive footage from the conflict.

Using modern production techniques the black and white was cleaned up and colourised, bringing to life the faces of the British serviceman who lived and died in the trenches of the Western Front.

The film begins in black and white, showing enlisting and training before breaking out into glorious colour, that’s something akin to early technicolour films like Gone With The Wind, once in France.

Adding sound and voices to the men on screen, thanks to lip reading, the world of 100 years ago really does come to life in a way it never has before.

Meanwhile, the footage is complemented by the voices of veterans who gave interviews about their experiences in the 1960s and 70s for a BBC documentary at the time.

Their insight is eye-opening, expressing views that would perhaps contradict modern ideas of how contemporary people felt about the First War World, perhaps in part being constructed by Hollywood films.

One of those most surprising things about the documentary was how funny it was at times; soldiers would laugh, joke and banter their way through France.

Of course, considering the death they were facing on a daily basis meant that sometimes humour is all they had left.

There’s even footage of British troops enjoying the company of German POWs, who the veterans said they tended to get on with and shared their common yearning for the war to end.

Nevertheless, when the 11th hour of the 11th day came in 1918 there was no real cause for celebration due to fears of unemployment on return to Britain.

One veteran even said it felt like “being made redundant”, while another added, “I’d do it all again.”

Yet Jackson noted in the Q&A afterwards that of course those who didn’t come back weren’t able to give their story and no doubt would feel very different about it all. In fact, he pointed out there’s one batch of footage shown from The Somme in which the men captured on film were killed just twenty minutes later.

All in all, They Shall Not Grow Old is a profoundly human look at the First World War.

While the audience hasn’t been through the same experience, the film provides a most relatable connection to the real people portrayed on screen; so expect both smiles and laughter alongside poignancy and tears.

See today's front and back pages, download the newspaper, order back issues and use the historic Daily Express newspaper archive.

Tony asks: “How?… Is this even possible?” (Iron Man and Ant-Man are shown travelling through the Quantum Realm. Tony and Scott are back in the battle of New York from 2012.

The final shot before the title reveal is an Infinity Stone disappearing from Thanos’ damaged gauntlet. He abruptly gets up and puts on his armour. His face goes from extremely infuriated to a menacing smile.

Stinger: The Hulk is training at the new SHIELD facility with Black Widow and Steve. Steve notices that Hulk has been training non-stop as of late, so he asks why. Hulk responds in Banner’s normal voice with: “My rematch is coming real soon, I can feel it!”

The Hulk is training at the new SHIELD facility with Black Widow and Steve. Sotheby's first gold-only auction includes a gold Ferrari and 24-karat gold bed sheets

    dent Donald Trump — proud.

Sotheby’s auction house is holding its first all-gold auction on Wednesday in London and there is, quite literally, something to suit the tastes of every member of the 1 percent.

The star of the show is a 1977 gold painted Ferrari, one of four in the world. Bidding will start at $450,000 for the car, which boasts a chestnut brown — not gold — interior.

And why not celebrate a successful bid on the car with a six liter gold bottle of Dom Pérignon champagne? Bidding for the 2002 bubbly starts at $19,278. Or perhaps you’d prefer the less expensive option: A gold three liter bottle of Louis Roederer 2002 Cristal Brut will start at $6,426.

Whichever sparkling beverage the winning bidder chooses can be poured into a set of eight wine goblets, which have a starting bid of $9,000.

Perhaps the most unusual item on the block is an 18-karat gold bust of supermodel Kate Moss, starting at $300,000. Called "Song of the Siren," the sculpture "boldly articulates the artist’s characteristic investigation into ideas of beauty and celebrity," according to Sotheby's.

The most expensive item is a 1961 painting from French artist Yves Klein, titled “Monogold Sans Titre.” The small gold panel starts at just over $1 million and articulates “the artist’s life-long preoccupation with the transcendental medium of gold,” according to Sotheby’s.

After all the excitement of Wednesday’s auction is over, one lucky deep-pocketed buyer can look forward to climbing into bed and getting some rest on a surprisingly soft king-sized set of bed sheets made of 24-karat gold and silk.

At just $38,000, they're unlikely to keep the 1 percent up at night.
