What to know about Nicole Maines: 'Supergirl' star and TV's 1st trans superhero

"Supergirl" returns to The CW on Sunday with a new season and a brand new star.

But 21-year-old Nicole Maines, who will play Nia Nal -- aka Dreamer -- is breaking down doors in ways other than using her superhuman abilities.

Maines, a transgender activist and actress, is TV's first trans star and knows what this moment means to the community and so many young kids who will be watching in awe later this weekend.

Maines was a real-life hero well before taking on this new role.

In 2013, Maines made headlines after being barred from using a girl's restroom at her school in Maine. She fought back, sued the school district and eventually the state's Supreme Judicial Court ruled that her rights had been violated, which was a major benchmark for trans rights.

Just a couple of years later, Maines was featured in a book, "Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family," and guest-starred on USA's "Royal Pains" as a transgender teen.

She later appeared in the documentary, "The Trans List."

So, we know Maines is incredible, but who is Nia Nal?

In the show, Nal plays a young reporter working with Kara Danvers aka Supergirl at CatCo Worldwide Media.

According to USA TODAY, her superpower is that she can dream the future -- hence the name Dreamer. Her suit has also yet to be revealed, but expect lots of blue.

The newspaper also adds that her superpowers will be intertwined with her inspiring journey as a trans woman.

Nal also is an alien, so you can imagine how prevalent and modern of a take this will be, especially since there is a faction of people in the "Supergirl" world that want to expel aliens from Earth ... respectfully, though, of course.

There are a ton of ways this storyline can go -- all in powerful, thought-provoking and inspiring ways.

Her journey and identity aside, Nal's powers are reminiscent of a Marvel Comics character from a few years back, who split the heroes right down the center on how to use those abilities to see the future.

Do you arrest or attack people that haven't done anything wrong yet, just because someone had a vision of this happening?

It's a really interesting question and one that doesn't have a clear, "right" answer.

"What's amazing with Nia is we have a trans woman who has personality and growth outside her trans-ness," Maines told USA TODAY. "She's a reporter, a superhero, a trans woman. She has a personal life."

  • 'He's Jewish. I'm not. But Hanukkah speaks to both of us.'

'He's Jewish. I'm not. But Hanukkah speaks to both of us.'

more often Jewish. I suppose it might be because, as an Armenian-American, I share some of the same stereotypical physical characteristics attributed to people from that part of the world.

There were times I never really went out of my way to correct any fleeting misconception about my identity because, as a non-religious person, it didn’t really matter to me. Though Armenian identity is formatively entwined with Christianity, my parents largely subscribed to their own, private ways of worship. As I grew older and read more about the world, I found it hard to reconcile the practice of blind faith in a single belief system. Eventually, I deduced there were common strands of knowledge that ran through all belief systems, but the only way we’d know all there was to know was when we were no longer here to tell anyone about it. That said, I always approached organized religion as a curious student, open to learning different theories about life’s mysteries.

Luckily, I married a man who feels similarly. He’s Jewish, so I found myself bestowed with the opportunity to learn about holidays people just assumed I always celebrated. We decided to combine forces, celebrating holidays in what I like to call an equal-opportunity-Judeo-Christian manner, meaning we celebrate Passover and Easter, Hanukkah and Christmas, more with the intent of acknowledging the composition of our kids’ DNA than actually engaging in spiritual worship.

I’ve come to love celebrating Hanukkah — and not just for my husband’s fantastic latkes. It’s beautiful to watch him and our children honor his ancestry as he dons his yarmulke, recites the blessings and lights the candles. I admire how so many aspects of Jewish worship and tradition honors the endurance of their culture against all odds (as of this past Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, it’s 5779) as much as it does what their culture believes. And, considering what my own ancestors have endured, I can relate in my own way.

Again, I am in absolutely no position to make a call about this writer’s predicament. But, what I can say, is that he is the product of a formidable legacy of survival. And, like my husband, he respects that enough to want to keep its treasured rituals going. If that isn’t an act of faith in and of itself, I don’t know what is.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate Switch review: Nintendo has a BIG problem going forward

os Ultimate, such is the wealth of content available in the game.

The biggest and best entry yet, Super Smash Bros Ultimate is stuffed tighter than a turkey at Christmas.

While quality and quantity don't always line up, Nintendo's kitchen sink approach most definitely makes for a better experience.

The roster of characters is huge, featuring every fighter that has ever appeared in a Smash game and then some.

Old stalwarts like Mario, Kirby, Link and Donkey Kong are all here, alongside returning guest characters like Bayonetta, Snake, Sonic and Pac-Man.

With interesting playstyles and some unique abilities, new characters like King K. Rool, Ridley, Inkling and Castlevania's Simon are great additions to a roster that's all killer and no filler.

Equally as impressive are the number of stages, which all have their own traps, transformations and pitfalls.

Learning the unique characteristics of the 100+ stages is a mammoth undertaking in itself, and that's before you factor in the excellent stage morph feature, which sees one arena make way for another mid-battle.

Just when you've learnt how to survive the spewing lava of Norfair, you're suddenly hit by a barrage of cannon fire after being transported to a pirate ship from The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker.

With eight player support, tens of items and transforming arenas, Ultimate is one of the most frenzied and thrilling multiplayer experiences you can have.

And then there's World of Light mode, which is the cherry on top of Nintendo's colossally calorific cake.

World of Light is an epic single-player experience that sees Kirby embark on a quest to save captured brawlers and spirits.

Spirits - which take the place of Trophies - can be equipped to provide the stat boosts and buffs that you'll need to get past some of the trickier fights.

With nearly 1,300 spirits to unlock from practically every gaming franchise you can think of, Spirits encompass Nintendo's more is better approach to Smash Bros Ultimate.

Once you've finished the 20-hour+ campaign, you can play through Classic Mode, which features six battles, a platforming bonus stage and a boss fight.

What's remarkable about this is that each character has its own unique path that's thematically tailored to them. Ryu, for example, battles against a green Donkey Kong that's clearly a nod to Blanka, followed by a Balrog-inspired clash with Little Mac.

These little touches just can't help but put a smile on your face.

Indeed, it's difficult to find a bad word to say about Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

The size of the roster, the number of stages, the endless Easter eggs, the cameos, the wonderful World of Light mode, the multiplayer, the list could go on.

It's hard to imagine anything bigger, better and more definitive that Super Smash Bros Ultimate, which well and truly lives up to its name.

See today's front and back pages, download the newspaper, order back issues and use the historic Daily Express newspaper archive.
