Chelsea news: Maurizio Sarri missed KEY transfer target due to Napoli clause

The new Blues manager has hit the ground running at Stamford Bridge despite an unsettling summer while finalising his Napoli exit.

Sarri holds the right-back in high regard after coaching him at Empoli and in Naples - but agent Mario Guiffredi has revealed why another move wasn't possible in the summer.

Without that clause he probably would have gone to Chelsea this summer

"Those who criticise him probably never make mistakes, but the rest of us are mere mortals," he told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli.

"Without that clause he probably would have gone to Chelsea this summer.

"People forget that he was one of the best two or three full-backs in Europe last season. Then it just takes two or three matches for him to become a donkey.

"I always say to let everyone talk and then respond on the pitch."

Napoli president De Laurentiis hit out at Sarri over the summer, accusing his former confidant of trying to rip apart his former side when he arrived at Chelsea.

But the outspoken club chief made sure the Italian couldn't take a host of Napoli stars to west London upon his arrival in the Premier League.

“I only let him go once he had signed a contract which stated he would not be allowed to sign any of our players – apart from Jorginho,” De Laurentiis said in August.

“There was a huge battle to take more of our players but they didn’t manage it.”

Hysaj is currently out of form for Napoli, who are enjoying life under Carlo Ancelotti.

Chelsea, on the other hand, are thriving under Sarri's leadership so far this term.

The Blues sit second in the Premier League table, only behind Manchester City on goal difference.
